The best washing machines

This guide covers front loader washing machines for Australian homes, from small units to big family machines. For most people the Bosch Series 8 10kg (WGH25400AU) is the pick, because it is very efficient, quiet and comes from the brand Australian owners rate best for performance and reliability. If you want to spend less, the Fisher & Paykel 9kg Series 5 does most of the same jobs for about half the price.

How we chose

A good washing machine cleans well, uses little water and power, keeps working for years and is easy to live with. We compared Better Homes & Gardens Australia's 2026 front loader rankings, Finder's 2026 survey of more than 60,000 Australian owners, Canstar Blue's owner ratings, owner reviews on ProductReview.com.au and lab testing from Reviewed. CHOICE tests many machines, but its model scores are for members only, so we used its free articles to rule out the models it says to avoid. All four picks are sold in Australia with local energy and water star ratings; the overseas versions of these machines use different model numbers, so we have not listed US or UK prices for them.

Questions people ask

Is a front loader or top loader better?

Front loaders usually use less water and power, spin clothes drier and are gentler on fabrics. Top loaders are often cheaper and easier on your back to load, and many wash faster. In CHOICE's 2026 testing, the cheapest top loaders it tested were all on its list of models to avoid, so check reviews carefully if you buy one.

What do energy and water star ratings mean on a washing machine?

In Australia, the Energy Rating Label shows how much power a machine uses per year, and the WELS label shows how much water it uses per wash. More stars means lower running costs. Compare the kWh and litre figures too, because a larger machine can use more in total even with the same stars.

What size washing machine do I need?

As a rough guide, 7 to 8 kg suits one to three people, 8 to 9 kg suits a family of four, and 10 kg or more suits bigger families or anyone who washes bedding often. A bigger machine run half-full wastes water and power, so do not oversize.

Can I install a washing machine myself?

A freestanding machine usually just plugs into a normal power point and screws onto your existing laundry taps, so many people do it themselves. If you need new taps, pipes, a drain or a new power point, that work must be done by a licensed plumber or electrician in Australia.
