The best carry-on luggage

This guide is for travellers who want one wheeled cabin bag that rolls smoothly, packs well and survives years of trips. The Travelpro Platinum Elite 21" Expandable Carry-On Spinner is the best all-rounder in testing, though it is longer than the 56 cm limit used by Qantas. If you fly on strict airlines, the Away The Carry-On fits that limit and is the best hardshell choice.

How we chose

A carry-on has to fit the airline's size and weight rules, roll easily through terminals, hold enough for a week and stand up to rough handling. We compared OutdoorGearLab's side-by-side testing (measured volume, wheel and handle scores, durability), Forbes Vetted's 2026 testing and Yahoo Shopping's tested picks, and checked dimensions and warranties on brand pages. Each pick is recommended by at least two of these testers. We gave extra weight to whether a bag fits the common 56 x 36 x 23 cm cabin limit, because many US-sized bags do not.

Questions people ask

What size carry-on is allowed on Qantas?

Qantas allows an overhead cabin bag up to 56 x 36 x 23 cm. In international economy the limit is 7 kg, and in domestic economy it is 14 kg in total with no single item over 10 kg. Other airlines, especially budget carriers like Jetstar, set their own rules, so check your booking before you fly.

Do carry-on size limits include the wheels and handles?

Yes. Airlines measure the whole bag, including wheels, handles and any outside pockets. Many US-market 21 or 22 inch bags measure 58 to 60 cm with wheels, which is over the 56 cm limit used by many airlines outside North America.

Is a hardshell or softside carry-on better?

Hardshells made from polycarbonate protect fragile items well and shrug off rain, but they scuff and usually do not expand much. Softsides made from ballistic or coated nylon usually have handy outside pockets, squeeze into a full overhead bin more easily and often expand. Either can be very durable if you buy a good brand with a strong warranty.

Can I use the expansion zip on a carry-on?

Expanding adds a few centimetres of depth, which can push a bag over the cabin size limit. Keep it zipped closed when you fly with it as hand luggage, and use the expansion when you plan to check the bag on the way home.
