The best running shoes

This guide covers daily road trainers: the one pair you run most of your kilometres in, from easy jogs to long runs. For most runners the ASICS Novablast 6 is the pick, because it is cushioned, light and lively without costing a fortune. If money is tight, the Nike Winflo 12 is stable and comfortable for much less, and runners who want extra support should look at the Saucony Hurricane 26.

How we chose

A daily trainer needs enough cushioning for long runs, a ride that does not feel dead, a stable platform and an upper that fits well, at a fair price. We compared lab measurements and testing from RunRepeat and RTINGS (weight, stack height, energy return, stability), multi-runner reviews from Doctors of Running and Tom's Guide, and OutdoorGearLab's 2026 guide. We only picked shoes that at least two testers rated highly for the same job, and we preferred brand-neutral lab data over marketing claims. Fit is personal, so try shoes on with your running socks if you can.

Questions people ask

How many kilometres do running shoes last?

Most daily trainers last somewhere around 500 to 800 km, depending on your weight, running style, the foam and the surfaces you run on. Replace them when the midsole feels flat, the outsole is worn smooth in places, or new aches appear that go away in a fresh pair.

Do I need a stability running shoe?

Stability shoes add firmer foam or guide rails to limit how much your foot rolls inward, which some runners who overpronate find more comfortable. Some research suggests comfort is a reasonable guide, so if a neutral shoe feels fine and you run without pain, you may not need one. A specialist running store or physio can help if you are unsure.

What does heel-to-toe drop mean in running shoes?

Drop is the difference between the heel and forefoot stack height, measured in millimetres. Most daily trainers sit between about 6 and 10 mm. If you move to a much lower drop, build up gradually, because it puts more load on your calves and Achilles.

Should I buy running shoes half a size bigger?

Many runners go up half a size from their everyday shoes, because feet swell on longer runs. Aim for about a thumb's width of space in front of your longest toe, with a snug heel and midfoot. Sizing varies between brands, so check fit each time you change models.
